Offering Assessment & Treatment for Swallowing Impairments

With over 50 years of combined clinical experience, Jennifer Horton and Shanda Hunter-Trottier have joined forces on a special project to bring an outpatient swallowing clinic to the Hamilton area. Hamilton-based Radiologists and Physicians determined a need for additional options for their patients who sit on lengthy waitlists for essential swallowing assessments. Jennifer & Shanda treat those very clients who need faster access to assessments that guide effective treatments. As a result, an outpatient clinic has been established that provides both table-side swallowing assessments and modified barium swallow assessments (videofluoroscopy) working alongside Radiologists and Radiology Technicians. 

With an opportunity to create the very best outpatient experience, based on knowledge, evidence and regulatory standards, Jennifer & Shanda established the Wentworth-Halton Swallowing Clinic.  This Hamilton-based clinic that offers trained Speech-Language Pathologists who are experienced in facilitating videofluorscopy assessments, have established community-based dysphagia practices, are certified in MBSImP (a standardized approach to assessments) and are knowledgeable with the implementation of the new International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI). 

In additional to quality assessments, the Wentworth-Halton Swallowing Clinic offers ongoing community-based treatment, working with patients and their caregivers to manage swallowing impairments through dietary modifications and evidence-based treatment practices. Due to their extensive community-based experience, Jennifer & Shanda are well equipped with wonderful community colleagues who can also assist, as needed, in area related to Dietary, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Respiratory Therapy and Counseling.
