Expansion is when a child uses a gesture, points, makes a sound or using a real word to communicate. Once the child has done so, the parent is going to expand on that by adding to it.

For example, if a child points to a cookie, the parent is going to also point to the cookie and label it β€œcookie.” This is therefore, expanding on the child’s current communication. Furthermore, if the child pointed the said β€œcookie” or a close word approximate of cookie, the parent could expand and say, β€œyummy cookie” to provide a two word utterance!πŸͺ
